ABOUT ME

I’m originally from Aotearoa New Zealand but now live on Noongar Boodjar in Western Australia. I love old dogs, blue flowers and ideas written on the back of envelopes.

CREATIVE PRACTICE

My creative practice involves both writing and visual arts. I make work for both children and adults. My picture book I Would Dangle the Moon, a playful story that encourages children to pose their own “What if…?” questions about the world, was released in 2019 by MidnightSun Publishing. I was both the author and illustrator for I Would Dangle the Moon. My short fiction for adults has been featured in literary magazines such as Overland, Westerly and Landfall and published by Night Parrot Press. My poetry for children has been published by Penguin Random House, Fremantle Press/Alphabet Soup Books and The School Magazine. I have been awarded an Emerging Writers’ Mentorship by the Australian Society of Authors and a Paper Bird Fellowship from Fremantle’s Paper Bird Books and Arts. I am currently completing a novel for young adults as part of my PhD.

QUALIFICATIONS

I have a Bachelor of Arts (English), Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) and a Graduate Diploma of Teaching. I also have an Honours Degree (First Class) in Creative Writing. I am a PhD candidate at Edith Cowan University.

TEACHING Experience

I have taught Art and English in New Zealand, Taiwan, Germany and Australia. I was Teacher in Charge of Photography at Logan Park High School in Dunedin, New Zealand.

I have also worked for the Department of Culture and the Arts (Western Australian government) in the area of arts education.

I love sharing my practice with young people and run creative workshops for schools and libraries. I have also undertaken art installations at various institutions and businesses in Western Australia. Your can see an example of an installation I did for Stockland Baldivis below (photo credit Marnie Richardson).
